General Information
updated: 05/18/06
Warm temperatures are really starting to melt the snow pack and the rivers are getting dirty. The areas to fish are limited until the Montana opener on Saturday. Then Memorial day weekend lots will open Yellowstone park and Idaho. The Madison below Hebgen is still good, but crowded. Hebgen is now getting good midge hatches and the fly fisherman are picking up some fish. Some news- on Monday the release from Hebgen is going up to about 2500cfs for the week in an attempt to stir up the gravel. This helps the health of the river. Also, there are some tagged fish in Hebgen and if you catch on note the tag color, date, location, and size of the fish.

The Madison River in Montana
updated: 05/18/06
This Staurday is the day, it is the general opener for Montana. Quake to Macatee will open to fishing. All of the tributaries to Hebgen in Montana will open as well.
The fishing remains good and the flow out of Hebgen has been cosistant for several weeks now. Cabin and Beaver creeks are dirty and will get worse before it gets better. Most people have been fishing between the dam and cabin creek. Glo-bugs and San Juan worms with small nymph dropper have been the best combos. The West fork is dumping in lots of dirt and the flows here have come up by 100cfs each day for the past several days. Right now it is just under 2000cfs at west fork.

Hebgen Lake
updated: 05/17/06
Hebgen Lake 06/16/06The chironomids are hatching mornings and evenings there are some rising fish. The best fishing is using a bead head chironomid dropped below a dry and you cast in front of the crusing fish. Along the north shore there has been good sized schools of fish working the shore and if you are in the right place at the right time you can teach them a lesson. Look for the hatches of midges to get better over the next two weeks. The chrionomids are big size #12.
