This Saturday, May 23 marks the opening of the Yellowstone National Park angling season. The Firehole always a perennial favorite will be the prime destination for most anglers wanting to fish dries. Expect to see PMD's and caddis but in the absence of rising trout, swing soft hackles for the most consistent results. The Gibbon is rising fast will be high and off-color as the weather forecast for the coming week has night-time temps above freezing followed by warm sunny days. Snow melt could become fast and furious for all the rivers in Yellowstone given this weather prediction. The Madison will also be high and off color but always clears quickly and will fish very well through June. The Taylor's Fork on the Gallatin is now pumping mud and in conjuction with it's very cold water temperature not a great choice at this time. But it also clears quickly due to it's fast gradient and will fish well through from June through the summer months. With the snowpack hovering at 110 percent of average the Madison River will undoubtedly have fine emergences all season long. The Montana season opened on May 16th with some Skwala's, midges and baetis hatching but nymphing and streamers have been the most productive methods for likely looking water.Hebgen Lake is icing out fast and Denny Creek Road is open to Rumbaugh Bay. While there is still ice at the dam the North shore is opening up quickly and early reports have been very good so far. With the heavy snowpack in place Hebgen easily will reclaim the volume of water lost early last fall when the head gates failed.
