Despite several weeks of unusually cool and rainy weather the fishing on the Madison River is now red hot. Goldenstones, PMD's, Yellowsallies, 5-6 species of Caddis and the eagerly awaited Salmonflies are all now hatching in abundance on the fifty mile riffle. The dry fly fishing on the Madison will only get better in days to come. The head of the Salmonfly hatch at this point is around Lyons Bridge with goldenstones hatching in good numbers in the wade stretch. Nymphing is best in the early a.m. hours with Sili-stones and Lex's stonefly as the point fly and a caddis pupa or baetis nymph dropper. By mid to late morning a dry/dropper combo is a great method for likely looking spots. Hebgen Lake has some gulper action starting as Callibaetis mayflies have been hatching in bigger numbers in the past 10 days, but at this point it's more miss than hit. The Firehole has only another 5-7 days left as it's really too warm in the afternoons and the trout are picky now. The Gallatin is so cold that arriving in the late a.m. hours or even noon is not too late. Expect to have entire stretches to yourself as it receives only light to moderate fishing pressure at this time of the year. The Harriman Ranch has also been red hot this year with big numbers of Green Drakes, Caddis and PMD's and and good numbers of bragging size bows too. Interestingly last year the H-Fork was difficult and Henry's Lake was easy but this year is just the opposite with Henry's Lake on some days and off others but as water temps. increase the fishing is becoming more reliable.
