The Madison River has been the prime destination for many anglers visiting the Yellowstone area, with caddis hatching in reduced numbers now as Epeorus mayflies and terrestrials make up the bulk of the trout's summer diet. But despite trout activity slowing on the Madison in the warm afternoon hours fishing has been very good to excellent on the Gallatin, Slough, Lamar and Soda Butte with some Spruce Moths in the morning hours, hoppers, beetles and ants in the afternoons. General attractors with bead head droppers are also working well on these rivers and is a great method for covering likely looking water fast. Spruce Moths will become more important to trout in the coming weeks but this won't be a banner year for them as they're on a periodical cycle like all bugs. Nymphing and streamers have been the most productive method in the a.m. hours with dries better from late morning on. Gulpers on Hebgen have kept lake fishers busy stalking trout on days when conditions are prime but cold nights and a cooler wetter summer has made gulper fishing fun and frustrating both. Sinking lines and chironomid fishing have continued to be the most effective lake techniques on both Hebgen and Henry's Lake this season. All of our area rivers in Yellowstone Country will fish very well into the fall as a result of a great snow pack, cool summer and plentiful rainfall.
